Luke 4:1-13

Temptation is always with is, as is Satan, who is just waiting for our strength to wane. When we are weak, Satan is always ready to strike. Satan tempted Eve in the garden and also tempted Jesus in the wilderness. Satan is a real being, not a symbol or an idea. He constantly fights against the Lord and those who follow and obey God.

You are powerless against Satan’s attacks unless you are a true believer in the Lord. Do not think you can avoid him on your own. You may think he can’t affect you, but if that is what you believe, you are already in his grasp. Only in Christ Jesus can we avoid the wiles of Satan.

Just look at all the well-intentioned figures throughout history that fell to their evil ways: Eve, Cain, Saul, David, Peter and the twelve disciples, Judas, and  many others. Even today, we hear or know great people, politicians, rock stars, sport stars and even clergy have been affected by the great deceiver.

Luke 4:1-13 shows that even Jesus was tempted and even His defeat of Satan in v.13 was not final. Throughout his ministry, Jesus would confront Satan in many forms.

Too often we see temptation as once and for all. In reality, we need to be constantly on our guard against the devil’s attacks. Where are you most susceptible to temptation right now? How are you preparing to withstand it?

Heavenly Father,
You died on the cross for us so that we would be safe from the attacks of Satan.  Be a shield from the devil’s ways, O Lord.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from all evil.
In Jesus Name, Amen
