Psalm 56

At some point in our lives, we have all experienced fear. I remember when I was a “little freckle-faced girl” growing up in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. There were many nights that I experienced fear. I generally didn’t have a lot of problems dealing with fear during the daylight hours; but my fear would come at night when I couldn’t see. Have you ever noticed that fear seems to come when you can’t see? My fear stemmed from an unseen man who lived in my neighborhood; and everyone called him “The Boogeyman”. I would be so scared of him that I would cover my head with my blanket so that he couldn’t see me. Even though I could barely breathe from being so covered up, I held on tightly to my blanket for dear life!

I always said my prayers before going to bed at night. Yet, when I would attempt to go to sleep, this is when I would think that I heard “The Boogeyman” trying to turn the doorknob to my room or coming out of my closet to get me. I would start praying again under my blanket. The amazing thing about my fear is that it always caused me to pray. I know now that during my time of fear that God was developing my trust in Him. For it was at that time of fear that I drew closer to Him through prayer and asked Him to keep me safely in His arms. And He did just that! I would fall to sleep. And the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up.

“The Boogeyman” still shows up every now and then in my life. You may be thinking, “How can this be?” It is because every now and then, I still have fears: fear of the unknown, fear of how I’m going to do certain things, fear of what’s going to happen with my children’s careers, and fear of what’s going to happen in my family’s life. My present fears cause me to go back to the fact that God was a Keeper when I was a little girl in those dark nights when I was afraid of “The Boogeyman”. It’s only then that I reflect and know that He will be a Keeper when I have fears now.

The Scripture says that David had great fear. But even in the midst of his fears, he always knew the one to call upon---and that One was God. So when “The Boogeyman” of fear shows up in your life, do as David did. Call upon God and watch the SON shine for you.

“In God I trust and am not afraid.” Psalm 56:11a

Dear God,
Thank you for the peace that you give me in the midst of my fears. I thank You for the strength that you give me in times of uncertainty and ask that you continue to guide me and guard me.
In Jesus’ Name I Pray,
