The driver operates only vehicles and routes assigned by Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (SMBC) and places passenger safety above schedule or convenience.

This position represents SMBC in direct service to the congregation and community. The employee is expected to respect and support SMBC's Christian mission and conduct all work in a professional, patient, and ministry-minded manner consistent with church policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely operate an assigned church bus, shuttle, van, or other authorized vehicle only when properly licensed, trained, rested, and fit for duty.
  • Transport authorized passengers on approved routes and follow assigned pickup, drop-off, parking, and scheduling instructions.
  • Complete and document required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including a final walk-through to ensure no passenger or personal property remains aboard.
  • Verify that the vehicle is safe to operate; do not drive a vehicle with an unsafe condition, warning indicator, or unresolved defect.
  • Comply with traffic laws, posted restrictions, vehicle-capacity limits, seat-belt requirements, and all SMBC transportation and insurance rules.
  • Maintain appropriate following distance, avoid distracted or aggressive driving, and use mobile devices only as permitted by law and SMBC policy.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and exiting within the driver's training and physical ability while using approved accessibility equipment and procedures.
  • Use authorized passenger lists, route records, keys, fuel cards, and other church property only for approved purposes and safeguard them from unauthorized access.
  • Promptly report delays, missed pickups, passenger concerns, unsafe conduct, vehicle damage, citations, license restrictions, accidents, injuries, and mechanical concerns.
  • Follow emergency, breakdown, evacuation, severe-weather, and accident procedures; contact emergency services when needed and complete required reports.
  • Never operate a vehicle while impaired, ill, dangerously fatigued, distracted, or affected by medication or another condition that could compromise safe driving.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, smoke-free vehicle and report sanitation, maintenance, fuel, or supply needs.
  • Protect confidential passenger and route information and use photographs, recordings, and social media only as authorized by SMBC policy.
  • Treat all passengers with dignity, patience, courtesy, and respect and use appropriate boundaries when transporting children or vulnerable adults.
  • Complete other transportation-related duties assigned within the employee's qualifications, training, and authorized work schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A current and valid driver's license of the class required for each assigned vehicle, including any commercial driver license, passenger endorsement, medical certification, or other credential required by law.
  • An acceptable driving record under SMBC's insurer and transportation policy and continued eligibility to operate the assigned vehicle.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate the assigned passenger vehicle safely and to follow written routes, schedules, inspection procedures, and emergency instructions.
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, sound judgment, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm during emergencies or changing conditions.
  • Ability to serve respectfully with children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and other passengers who may require additional time or assistance.
  • Successful completion of SMBC's screening process, required driver and vehicle-specific training, and any legally required drug and alcohol testing program applicable to the assigned vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating a church bus, shuttle, passenger van, school bus, or similar vehicle.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification within the timeframe set by SMBC.

When applicable to the assigned vehicle or operation, the driver must participate in federally or state-required testing, medical certification, recordkeeping, and qualification processes. The employee must promptly disclose any citation, arrest involving driving, crash, license suspension or restriction, medical limitation affecting safe operation, or other change that may affect eligibility to drive for SMBC.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work may involve prolonged sitting and driving; entering and exiting vehicles; turning the head and body to observe traffic and passengers; operating doors, controls, lifts, and emergency equipment; standing, walking, bending, reaching, and assisting with light vehicle supplies. The employee must be able to see and hear conditions necessary for safe driving and passenger supervision, consistent with applicable licensing standards. Specific lifting or passenger-assistance expectations must be confirmed by SMBC based on the assigned vehicle, equipment, staffing, and insurer guidance.

Scheduling and Timekeeping

Drivers are scheduled according to ministry needs and are not guaranteed a minimum number of trips or hours. Employees must accurately record all compensable time, including required inspections, fueling, cleaning, waiting, training, meetings, and post-trip duties, and must obtain approval before working outside the assigned schedule.
